NEW teaches sexual harassment/discrimination prevention in order to equip women with tools to diffuse the beginnings of any harassment.
Students are given job readiness and interview skills to prepare them for entering apprenticeships.
Trades Math
Helicon Inc., a non-profit organization committed to raising women’s confidence and comprehension in math, teaches approximately 20 hours of trades-focused math.
Helicon also provides extra preparation outside of class for women preparing to take tests to enter apprenticeships.
Hands-on
The curriculum includes hands-on instruction (carpentry, blueprint reading, basic electricity and painting) all taught by union members of the individual trade.
Health and Safety
New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) provides a health and safety training component. The information covered includes an introduction to occupational safety and health, hazardous materials, ergonomics, and women’s health and safety issues.
Fitness
NEW partners with the McBurney YMCA. Students receive an evaluation from a personal trainer and attend lectures on anatomy focusing on muscle groups used in lifting and carrying and nutrition.
