Nontraditional Employment for Women is a nonprofit organization founded in 1978. NEW prepares women for careers in the building and construction trades and other blue-collar careers such as public utilities, and transportation.

NEW is the first organization of its kind in the United States. It is the only training program in New York City that focuses specifically on helping women gain access to high-paying
blue-collar careers.

Through its innovative training programs, NEW prepares women to compete
for blue-collar careers that allow women to achieve economic self-sufficiency.

What makes skilled blue-collar work a good choice for women?

  • High pay. Wages can be as high as $43.00/hr.
  • Excellent medical benefits.
  • Pensions and paid annuities.
  • Training. Many blue-collar jobs offer technical classroom training as well as on-the-job training



What are some of the challenges women face in the blue-collar field?

  • Blue collar professions are both physically and mentally demanding.
  • Most jobs require very early hours and lots of lifting and carrying.
  • Year-round outdoor work is required in most jobs—even on the coldest winter and the hottest summer days.
  • While the numbers are growing, less than 3% of all construction workers are women. Women need to be prepared to work in a predominently male environment.
